In lovely matured condition, this is a very nice brass Verner's Pattern VIII Prismatic field compass. These have a glass prism and a glass window on the lid with a line across it, which is used to determine the bearing of an object in the distance. It has a dry card compass with both a momentary bearing lock and transit lock, which rotates in the base. When the compass card stops, the required bearing is read off
