It was from there that, several hundred years ago, the first Malvasia vine cuttings were shipped to the maritime republic of Venice, which had annexed Crete in 1204. To this day, however, it remains unclear which members of the Malvasia family those vines actually belonged to. Malvasia spread so rapidly across the Mediterranean that medieval marketing experts soon began calling
